One girl and four boys from Brentwood High School have qualified for the Class 2 state track and field championships May 20-21 in Jefferson City.
Senior Sophia Rivera qualified in the shot put and discus throw for the fourth year in a row with lopsided wins at the May 7 district meet and May 14 sectional meet.

Senior Kaylon Jenkins qualified in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and as a member of the 400- and 800-meter relay teams. His state-bound teammates on both relays are seniors Jacob Clay and Deshaun Johnson and junior Justice Harris.

Three Eagles qualified for the sectional by finishing in the top four at district, but didn’t make the cut in those events for the state meet: freshman John Walthall in the 3,200-meter run, Justice Harris in the 300-meter hurdles and Clay in the 100.

Rivera is shooting for her seventh and eighth first-place state medals in the shot put and discus throw. The javelin throw will be held for the first time as an exhibition event in Jefferson City and she is the heavy favorite to win that as well. In April she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the javelin.

Brentwood’s same 400 relay team — Jenkins, Clay, Johnson and Harris — won a fifth-place medal at state last year. Two years ago Clay and three seniors won fourth place in the event. Jenkins also qualified in the 200 last year but didn’t make it past the preliminaries.
