Defense is airtight for 70-plus minutes

There’s truth to the sports cliché that the best offense is a good defense. But that doesn’t mean you can win without offense.
The Brentwood High School field hockey team lived the lesson on Tuesday in a 1-0 overtime loss to Notre Dame at Mark Twain Elementary School.
For more than 70 minutes the Eagles repelled every attack the Rebels could muster. Defenders Audrey Brown and Emma Lochmoeller won battle after battle to keep the ball away from goalkeeper Emma Stoverink. Brown was especially tireless, rushing up to strip the ball from Notre Dame’s forwards over and over again.
“She was the intensity, the motivator,” said BHS assistant coach Carrie Spencer.
When the ball did get through to Stoverink, she showed confidence and judgment not normally seen in a sophomore — knowing when to rush up and boot it clear and when to lay back and make a save.
Neither team had won a game yet this season so both were hungry. But in the end, about halfway through the 10-minute overtime period, it was the Rebels who were able to put together an offensive play to end it. Stoverink was lured out of the net to stop a drive and forward Ellie Meystrik shot the ball past her for a 1-0 victory.
It was the type of play Brentwood’s arsenal has lacked this season. The team has scored only three goals — one each by Lochmoeller, Abby Harper and Oni Wright.
The loss came one day after a 1-0 double overtime loss to Pattonville. It’s no wonder Spencer and head coach Janie Schneider looked weary afterwards. Also, it bothered them that some of their players seemed in good spirits after Notre Dame.
“It means something for them to play as hard as they did,” offered Spencer.
“Yeah,” said Schneider, “but when I played for Brentwood and we lost a close one like this, I was crushed. I’d go home that night and cry. I’d like to see our girls more upset by a loss like this.”
