Six Brentwood High School students qualified for the Class 2 state track and field meet with high finishes at the sectional meet on Saturday at Park Hills Central.

The Eagles finished first in three events. Sophia Rivera won both the sectional shot put and the discus for the third year in a row. Also coming in first was the 400-meter relay team of Jacob Clay, Kaylon Jenkins, Justice Harris and Deshaun Johnson.

Kaylon Jenkins was third in the 200 and Clay was fourth in the 100.

Deshaun Johnson ran a leg on the first-place 400 relay team at the sectional meet Saturday at Central Park Hills.

Though the sectional was held on a rainy day, in the 400 relay Brentwood improved its time from the week before at district, from 45 seconds to 44.77.

The rest of the qualifiers were off their district performances. Rivera’s 47 feet 6.5 inches in the shot put didn’t match her personal-record 49-5 from district. Her 143-4 in the discus throw was only six inches shy of the week before, though not close to her personal best of 149-9.

Clay ran 11.76 seconds in the 100 and Jenkins 23.57 in the 200 after respective times of 11.64 and 23.42 at district.

Two of Brentwood’s six qualifiers also went to state last year. Rivera, a junior, is a two-time Class 2 Missouri champ in both the shot put and discus throw. Clay ran a leg on the 400 relay team that won a third-place medal in 2014.

An athlete must finish in the top four at the sectional to qualify for the state championships held this weekend in Jefferson City. Those who competed but did not qualify on Saturday were the girls 400 relay team of Air’shay Lampkin, Adrienne Silerio, Alesha Williams and Leanna Baudendistel, Lampkin in the 100 and long jump, and the boys 800 relay.

Sophia Rivera winds up to throw the discus in practice. On Friday and Saturday she will attempt to win her fifth and sixth state gold medals in the discus and shot put.
