The first day of the state wrestling championships were not kind to Brentwood High School. Of the six BHS wrestlers who qualified for the meet, held at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, four were eliminated from competition on Thursday, Feb. 19. The only two who survived to wrestle on Friday are senior Alex Patton and junior Gary Silerio.

Patton won his first-round match with a pin to advance to the quarterfinals. Silerio lost his first match 21-3, a technical fall, but stayed alive by pinning his opponent in 54 seconds in Round 1 wrestlebacks. Both Patton and Silerio will compete again on Friday morning. Two losses eliminate a wrestler.
The four Eagles who were eliminated by each going 0-2 were senior Kyle Pudlowski, juniors Deshaun Johnson and Joe Dreyer, and freshman Chase Lynch. Facing elimination after losing his first match, Pudlowski almost advanced to the next round but lost a 6-5 decision to end his high school wrestling career.
If Patton wins on Friday morning he will be in the semifinals starting at 6 p.m. Friday. A win there would put him in the finals on Saturday. Silerio will also wrestle again on Friday if he wins on Friday morning.
The six BHS wrestlers qualified for state by placing in the top four of their respective weight classes last Saturday at the Class 1 District 1 meet. See Brentwood Spirit coverage of that event here.
