Brentwood’s eighth-grade football team rose to 2-1 with a 14-8 victory over a team of home-schooled students on Monday in Brentwood. The Junior Eagles have also beaten Affton 31-20 and lost to MICDS 41-14.
The seventh-grade Junior Eagles are 1-1, having beaten Affton 7-6 and lost to MICDS 33-7.
The Brentwood teams are coached by Ben Peters, John Sappington, Fred Brown, Tom Magee and Ethan Griesemer.
Seventh grade: Brentwood 7, Affton 6
The Junior Eagles took the lead on Chris Hill’s 22-yard run with 1:50 left in the second quarter. Reggie Jeffrey ran in the extra point to provide the margin that ended up winning the game for Brentwood.
It looked as if Affton had tied the score at 7 with 1:05 left in the game, but the Cougars were penalized for having an ineligible man downfield.
Eighth grade: Brentwood 31, Affton 20
Long runs by Al Slater and a leaping interception by Jordan Tate helped give Brentwood a 12-0 lead with 1:39 remaining in the first quarter. It all happened within three minutes: Slater scored on a run, Tate made the interception, Slater broke free for a 40-yard gain to the Affton 20, and Mason Mills scored on a four-yard run to make it 12-0.
Affton scored on a 15-yard run several minutes later and kicked a two-pointer to make it 12-8.
Both teams were scoreless for the remaining eight minutes of the first half. But in the second half Brentwood scored three TDs to Affton’s two to win it.
