Talk about starting with a bang.

The Brentwood High School soccer team opened the season with a 10-0 victory over Hazelwood East on Tuesday in Brentwood. Their scheduled opener against Metro last week rained out.

Senior Ben Moran led the attack with three goals. Also scoring at least one apiece were Quinn Evans, Rayce Lynch, Seamus Saunders, Bradley Jones, Neal Bhattacharya and Cristian Sanchez.

Having beaten Hazelwood East 1-0 each of the past two seasons, Saunders was surprised at the rout.

“We weren’t really expecting it because for the past two years we won 1-0 and our goal would always come late in the game,” said Saunders. “So I’m assuming they just had a bunch of seniors last year. We were just out there moving the ball around. We weren’t expecting to score 10 on them.”

The Eagles, 1-0, scored eight goals in the first half. Goalkeeper Jordan McGehee earned the win.

Brentwood opens the conference schedule on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Bayless. The Broncos beat the Eagles 4-0 twice last season.

“Bayless is Thursday so that will be the real test,” said Saunders.
