Brentwood High School won two medals at the state track and field championships today in Jefferson City. Sophia Rivera won the Class 2 girls shot put and Justice Bratcher took sixth in the Class 2 boys long jump.
Last year Rivera won the shot put and Bratcher took 13th in the long jump. The top eight finishers in each event receive a medal.
BHS will compete in two other events on Saturday, May 24. Rivera will attempt to win the discus for the second year in a row. Brentwood will also compete in the finals of the 400-meter relay. The relay team of Bratcher, Jake Zivic, Jacob Clay and Devon Couch qualified for the finals with a fourth-place finish in the event’s preliminaries today.
Rivera won the shot put with a school-record throw of 45 feet and 8 inches. That’s 4 feet 8 inches farther than her winning throw last year and 7-1/2 inches better than her previous personal best.
Competing against 15 other girls, Rivera was the only sophomore in the top five. Her 45-8 was less than 12 inches from setting the all-time Class 2 shot put record, which is 46-7-1/4.
Bratcher long-jumped 20 feet 8-1/2 inches for the sixth-place medal. That’s 12 inches farther than he jumped at state last year. But he would have won the event on Friday if he had equaled the personal-best 22-2-3/4 he recorded last week at the sectional.
At state he said he was hampered by an old back injury that he aggravated while on a senior class outing earlier this week.
“I kind of messed up my back on roller coasters at Six Flags the day before I left for state,” he said.
Bratcher and fellow seniors Couch and Zivic got back from state on Friday afternoon in time to participate in their 6 p.m. commencement ceremony. After graduating, Bratcher said he’s just glad he reached his goal of medaling.
“I just wanted to place,” he said.
After not even qualifying for state last year, the 400 relay team had the fourth best time among 16 Class 2 schools in the prelims on Friday. They covered the distance in 44.38 seconds, shattering their previous best of 44.6.
“We were in a pretty fast heat, with Maplewood and Carnahan, so we were just trying to keep up with them,” said Couch.
