Wrestlers Head Into Last Week of Regular Season

The Brentwood High School wrestling team has won three more duals and another tournament in the past 11 days. They routed Normandy, Herculaneum and Orchard Farm by a combined score of 219-12 and had 13 wrestlers medal in winning the Riverview Gardens Invitational.

On Saturday they competed in the Lathrop Invitational. Those results will be published when they become available.

The wins lifted the Eagles’ record in dual meets to 13-3 and gave them their third tournament title of the season.

“The last thing I want is for us to be comfortable,” said coach Roy Hughes. “We’re doing okay, but we have to keep improving to get to the state level. We have several guys who could do well at state but they have to make the sacrifices along the way to get there − the extra conditioning, watching video of themselves, stuff like that.”

Hughes didn’t specify who those individuals are, but you can do the math. Before the Lathrop tournament, seniors Blake Kelley, Kyle Pudlowski and Lucas Jones had a combined record of 83-7. Kelley, at 152 pounds, was 30-1. Pudlowski (160) was 28-2 and Jones (120) was 25-4.

Kelley, 33-10 at this time last season, likes being 30-1. His lone loss was a 7-4 decision to Mikal Walters of Sumner in the Riverview Gardens Invitational.

“It actually makes me kind of like wrestling,” Kelley said with a smile. “My goal is to place at state. My one loss is to the Sumner kid. I beat him at Burroughs and he beat me at Riverview.”

Back from the Dead

One of the most interesting matches last week was Tyler Patton’s pinning of Luke Prinster of Orchard Farm at BHS. Prinster put Patton on his back for more than a minute. Patton grimaced but fought off the pin. Then he suddenly made a move and was on top of Prinster, pinning him at 2 minutes, 44 seconds.

“It was just bad wrestling on my part,” said Patton, a senior. “They moved him [Prinster] up a weight class for the match, from 174 to 182, so I might have been a little overconfident going into it. When I was on my back I was thinking, ‘How’d this happen?’ I heard their coach yell, ‘Let go of the leg,’ and as soon as he did I rolled through and came out of it. I’m guessing he was surprised because normally when someone has you in a cradle, they pin you. Then I won the coin toss and chose the top. I broke him down, got him in a wrist half and rolled him over onto his back.”
