The Brentwood High School wrestling team has beaten its first four opponents of the season. BHS knocked off Priory and Principia in a double dual meet in Brentwood on Tuesday, and Gateway and St. Mary’s in a similar meet at St. Mary’s on Thursday.

It’s barely a week into the season and Blake Kelley (152 pounds) and Kyle Pudlowski (160) are already on hot streaks. They’ve each faced four wrestlers and they’ve each pinned four wrestlers. Jordan Roddy (285) is also undefeated, with two pins and two forfeits.

BHS vs. Priory and Principia

The Eagles trailed almost halfway through their 51-24 triumph over Priory, and led by only three points with four matches left. But a pin and three consecutive forfeits turned the lead into a 27-point landslide.

The 43-30 victory over Principia was different. Brentwood won seven of the first nine matches for a 27-point lead before being outscored 18-4 in the final five matches.

BHS got big points from three wrestlers. Recording two pins apiece were Kelley, Pudlowski and Roddy. Roddy was the quickest worker, taking only 1 minute and 37 seconds, combined, to pin both opponents. Pudlowski did it in 1:58 and Kelley in 3:19.

Eagles with one pin each were Tyler Patton (182) and Alex Patton (220). Tyler missed all of last season with an injury. The senior said he has lost 43 pounds since October to be ready for this year.

Brentwood wrestlers who went 2-0 on the night, with at least one forfeit, were Dexter Ramos (106), Justin Harris (120 and 126), Tyler Patton and James Nelson (195).

Lucas Jones went 1-0. He made weight to wrestle at 126 but was moved up to 132 against Priory and won a decision.

“It was a good test of going up a weight class,” he said.

Actually, 132 is up three weight classes from where Jones wrestled last year, when he qualified for state at 113. He’s the only returning Eagle who won a match at state. Now he’s glad to have won the first match of his senior year.

“I’ve been jittery about this first match,” he said after winning it, “but I think the jitters are all gone now.”

Five other Eagles are back on the team after qualifying for state last season: Dexter Ramos at 106, Gary Silerio at 120, Kelley at 138, Pudlowski at 152 and Alex Patton, 220.

  1. Also of interest, the referee in the photo with Reed Nelson(and several other photos) is Skip Watkins who was officiating back even in the seventies, often at BHS for Coach Bob Penn’s dual meets. Skip was a very successful wrestler himself for Maplewood and he’ll tell you his kids were even better. A good guy.

    1. Thanks for telling us Skip Watkins’ name, Ken. One thing I liked about him is how he raised the winner’s arm to one side of the gym and then again to the other side. Not all refs do that. Also, he seems to have a good attitude about his job.

  2. Now we need one of your streaming headlines announcing our wrestler’s dominating victory at John Boroughs Tournament! Huge margin over JB, Ladue, and Clayton among others.
