Last week’s heat wave didn’t stop 23 youngsters from attending the Paul Zarky Metro Strikers Summer Soccer Camp at Norm West Park from July 18-21. Organized through the Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department, the camp met for two hours a day to teach soccer fundamentals to boys and girls ages 4 to 12.

Leading the kids was Zarky, a select soccer coach and former pro player for the St. Louis Ambush, the St. Louis Knights, the Kansas City Attack and the Sacramento Knights. He’s also executive director of the Metro Strikers Soccer Club.

Zarky’s assistants were Katie Allman, who played soccer for Webster Groves High School, and former Brentwood High School standout Sam Lund.

Lund is a goalkeeper for Quincy University in Illinois, an NCAA Division II school. He was redshirted last season as a freshman after fracturing his forearm in a club soccer match and is eager for practice to start on August 14. Zarky’s Brentwood camp was the sixth soccer camp Lund has worked at this summer.
